What is the carbon footprint?

The carbon footprint measures the total amount of greenhouse gases (such as COâ‚‚, methane and other gases) that a company directly or indirectly causes. These emissions are often divided into three categories:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from own sources, e.g. production facilities or company vehicles.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy such as electricity or heat.
  • Scope 3: Emissions along the value chain, for example from transportation, supplier activities or product use.

Calculating all emissions is complex but provides a complete view of a company's climate impact.

Why is the carbon footprint so important?

A comprehensive overview of a company's carbon footprint not only offers ecological advantages, but also economic ones:

  • Sustainability strategy: A low carbon footprint demonstrates a commitment to climate protection and strengthens the corporate brand.
  •  Regulatory compliance: Laws such as the CSRD require reports on COâ‚‚ emissions and their reduction.
  • Competitive advantage: Customers and partners prefer companies that actively work on climate protection strategies.
  • Cost reduction: More efficient use of energy and conservation of resources save money in the long term.

Challenges in measuring and reducing

Many companies struggle with the complexity of data collection. Emissions in Scope 3, which are often caused by external suppliers or customers, are particularly difficult to determine. Furthermore, there is often a lack of tools to evaluate the impact of specific measures

Practical examples of emissions reductions

  • Optimization of logistics: Emissions can be significantly reduced by using more efficient routes or means of transport.
  •  Energy efficiency: Switching to renewable energies or energy-efficient machinery reduces Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
  • Supply chain management: Working with sustainable suppliers reduces Scope 3 emissions.
