The EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Supply Chains (EUDR)
The EU Deforestation Regulation, or EUDR for short, is a global step towards greater forest protection. Companies must meet various requirements in order to reduce global deforestation and protect primary forests.
Who is affected by the EU Deforestation Regulation?
Companies that
import
place on the European market,
or export
one or more of the affected raw materials or specific derived products:
Wood
Cocoa
Rubber
Cattle
Palm oil
Coffee
Soy
How to Comply:
Obligations
Risk Assesments
Conduct risk analyses: one for the country of origin, including documentation and specific assessments, and another for deforestation-free products using satellite data.
Due Diligence Statement (DDS)
Market participants, traders, and exporters are required to submit a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) for EUDR-relevant goods, including the geolocation and production period of each product.
Compliance with Local Regulations
Ensure adherence to all relevant social and environmental regulations in the country of production.
Deforestation-Free Production
Verify that no forests have been cleared or converted for production purposes, ensuring deforestation-free processes.
Sanctions and Audits
National Authorities
Member states must conduct regular monitoring and audits to ensure compliance with the regulation.
Sanctions
Companies that fail to comply face fines of up to 4% of their annual turnover in the EU, as well as product and income confiscation measures .
EUDR Compliance Challenges and How osapiens Solves Them
Data Collection
Manually collecting geolocation, polygon data, and timestamps was not feasible. The osapiens solution automates and streamlines this process for greater accuracy and speed.
Integration into Existing Production Processes
Integrating compliance solutions with existing ERP systems was a challenge. The osapiens software simplifies this, allowing seamless compliance integration across all production processes.
Risk Assessment and Compliance
Verifying product legality and origin was difficult. The osapiens solution streamlines risk assessments, guaranteeing EUDR compliance and the deforestation-free status of relevant products.
Integration and Data Sharing
Sharing EUDR data across the supply chain was complex. Communicating EUDR data across the supply chain is secure and easy with osapiens. The solution also automates statement submission.
Core elements of our solution for EUDR
Before products enter the EU market or are exported, relevant data must be collected, documented, and assessed, including geolocational data. The osapiens HUB for EUDR provides a comprehensive solution. A free app supports geolocation, compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation, and shipment tracking, enhancing logistics efficiency through batch creation and aggregation.
Data Collection
for EUDRCollect geospatial and time data for production or harvesting intuitively, and perform plausibility checks through a mobile app, Supplier Portal, and standard interfaces for seamless integration and monitoring.
Risk Analysis:
Legality AssessmentAutomated assessment to identify potential compliance risks with EUDR and local regulations, utilizing country and industry indexes. Mitigation is achieved through supplier and product certificates and detailed questionnaires.
Risk Analysis:
Deforestation AssessmentAutomated assessment to identify potential risks of deforestation, forest degradation, and land conversion to agriculture. Features include false positive handling, land use conversion verification, and case management.
DDS Preparation
and SubmissionAutomated generation and submission of the Due Diligence Statement (DDS) to the EU, streamlined data exchange for EUDR products with the downstream supply chain, and comprehensive documentation of all EUDR-related processes for audit purposes.
Data Collection
Supplier Portal
The supplier portal includes accounts for direct suppliers, allowing for the management of orders, data requests, and land parcels. Standard interfaces are integrated to transmit EUDR-relevant data from suppliers and forward it to customers. Additionally, a mobile app enables the collection of polygon data and harvest timings directly from producers, ensuring ease of use for both direct and indirect suppliers.
Risk Analysis
Legality Assessment
The integration of master data incorporates business partner information, including NACE codes and country of origin. An abstract risk analysis is conducted based on indices, followed by a concrete risk analysis that includes the integration of evidence and the dispatch of questionnaires.
Risk Analysis
Deforestation Assessment
Order or product information is transmitted by transferring relevant order positions or product details from the ERP system. Suppliers receive requests for the necessary information, and information is provided per order and for each product along with its validity period. The deforestation risk analysis involves reconciling stock data as of a specific date, performing time series analysis for forest disturbances, and conducting dedicated checks for unauthorized land conversions. In cases of known risk, a report is generated.
Technical Implementation
DDS Preparation and Submission
A new Due Diligence Statement (DDS) is automatically generated, incorporating relevant data such as risk assessments, product data, geolocations, harvest dates, product parameters, and verifying the accuracy of product information. The risk overview assesses the legality and deforestation risk in relation to the products contained within the DDS. The DDS is submitted to the EU information system by creating a file from the consolidated EUDR data and conveniently transmitting the DDS to the EU information system via API.
Case management
Risk Mitigation
In cases of increased risk, the osapiens HUB for EUDR integrates information about risk-mitigating circumstances, such as product or supplier certifications, along with details for individual case management (e.g., questionnaires). To further facilitate and automate risk mitigation, osapiens HUB for EUDR utilizes existing certificates as risk mitigation measures by reducing the respective EUDR risk dimensions.
