The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is a specialized agency within the UN system, specifically tasked with promoting, energizing, and accelerating industrial development worldwide. This mission aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, which focuses on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation. However, UNIDO’s initiatives extend beyond SDG 9, playing a crucial role in the broader achievement of all the SDGs. The organization envisions a world without poverty and hunger, where industry drives low-emission economies, enhances living standards, and safeguards a sustainable environment for current and future generations, ensuring inclusivity for all.
To support its 172 Member States, UNIDO operates through mandated functions: technical cooperation; action-oriented research and policy-advisory services; normative standards-related activities; and fostering partnerships for knowledge and technology transfer. UNIDO’s efforts are focused on three key areas: ending hunger by helping businesses from farm to fork; stopping climate breakdown by using renewable energy and energy efficiency to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions; and supporting sustainable supply chains so that developing country producers get a fair deal and scarce resources are preserved.
